System Concepts

The studio has developed expertise in designing furniture systems that define spatial settings and ‘platform’ designs that share parts across a range of forms. Because of the scale of these proposals, not all reach production. The projects below were developed with industry partners but not produced, and are included here to demonstrate a process of systems thinking.

Union Lounge

Client: OFS, 2015

Design: Scott Klinker and Mike Devereaux

The Union Lounge system combines case goods and upholstery into a flexible landscape of tiered architectural forms for sitting, working, and socializing. The system defines distinctive settings while maintaining sight lines across the room. Designed specifically for the public ‘Third Place’ like hotel lobbies, airport lounges, and university libraries.

Platform Chair

Client: Gunlocke, 2017

Design: Scott Klinker and Mike Devereaux

This family of chairs is built around several shared parts including a plywood shell, molded armrests, and upholstered pads. Several types - including side chairs, stacking chairs, and wooden guest chairs - all share a no-nonsense functionalism with a strict line quality. Platform thinking offers a family vocabulary across a range of products with streamlined development and reduced tooling costs.

Annex Lounge

Client: Gunlocke, 2017

Design: Scott Klinker and Mike Devereaux

The Annex Lounge was developed and prototyped with Gunlocke as an expression of their brand values focused on woodcraft. The system emphasizes wood accents that add warmth and tactility to workplace interiors.
